This photograph was taken by Edward Curtis in 1908. It is a Crow indian named Two Whistles, wearing warpaint and a medicine hawk headdress. I find these old photographs fascinating and have used them a lot as reference for my Native American Indian paintings. A lot of them are understandably lacking in detail, this one is better than most. It has a real sense of nobility and stoicism which I wanted to capture.
So my most recent painting was based on this photograph. It is 12 x 16 inches, watercolour on Stonehenge paper. I have made an 'Artwork In Progress' feature for this painting which can be seen by clicking here
