Charging Tortoise (With Wolf)

I got some beautiful wolf reference photographs from the Paint My Photo website recently so here is my latest project.
It's 21 x 14 inches, graphite pencil on Stonehenge paper. I wanted something more than just the wolf in the composition and was going to add a bird, but that has been done before. Looking out of my studio window into the garden I spotted Walton the tortoise peering from behind a flower pot. Walton isn't a real tortoise, he's made of stone and very old but quite attractive in a tortoisey kind of way, so I decided to go with him instead!

Now I'm sure it will be pointed out to me that you don't see wolves in the same territory as tortoises but actually, a few years ago before they were hunted almost to extinction wolves would have ranged over the entire area of North America right down into Mexico as well as all over most of Europe. The tortoise can still be found in the South Western States as well as a lot of European countries such as Turkey. Both creatures sadly are endangered now.

Although a lot of hours work I thoroughly enjoyed drawing this piece. It's one of those that just seemed to go right from beginning to end. Must get some watercolours done soon though..........

I have spent some time with wolves and you have really captured their gentle nature in this piece!

As I said, I'm not sure, but since xe is selling prints, and the other art in xir gallery is stolen, I thought I ought to make sure.
